An armed leftist group said Tuesday that the fate of a kidnaped army colonel depends on the willingness of Chile’s military government to take immediate steps to restore democracy.

The Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front distributed Polaroid photographs to prove it was holding Col. Mario Haeberle, 58, who was seized by seven gunmen as he left his home Monday.

The front, an armed branch of the outlawed Communist Party, urged the Chilean army to stop supporting President Augusto Pinochet and lead the country back to democratic rule.
