Takako Doi is strongly favored to become the first woman to head a major political party in Japan after only one other candidate entered the race against her for the post of chairman of the Socialist Party. If elected, Doi, 57, Socialist vice chairperson and a former university lecturer in constitutional law, would be in line to become Japan’s first woman prime minister if the Socialists were to win a majority of seats in a parliamentary election. At present, the Socialists hold 16.8% of the seats.
