The father of South Africa’s first test-tube quadruplets was slain by intruders at his luxury home, and police today arrested four men and two women at a black squatter camp in connection with the killing.

Real estate agent Stanley Hinrichsen, 53, was shot in the face and stabbed in the back by three masked intruders, and his wife, Renate, 33, was stabbed repeatedly. She is hospitalized in good condition.

A neighbor who was helping her with the children when the attack happened said Mrs. Hinrichsen offered the attackers money if they would agree not to hurt the babies, who were born May 8. The neighbor locked herself and the three surviving infants in the nursery and called police. She and the babies were not injured.

Police said nothing appeared to have been stolen from the house but recovered Hinrichsen’s car, along with two knives and a revolver, when the six suspects were arrested early today at Crossroads, a squatter camp east of Cape Town. Police also said $40 was found on the kitchen table when officers entered the blood-spattered house.

Officers said they were questioning a woman who had worked as a servant for the Hinrichsens. They did not elaborate, and it was not clear if she was among the six reported arrested.
