More than 5,000 Pennsylvania students missed their first day of class as teachers struck two school districts, while strikes in Illinois and Michigan kept nearly 14,000 students out of school. No talks were scheduled in the Pennsylvania strikes, which were called in a dispute over salaries, benefits and job security. The largest of the strikes idled 8,200 students in Champaign, Ill., for a third day.
