Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak paid a brief visit to Jordan on Thursday and met with King Hussein for what he described as continuous consultations aimed at reviving Middle East peace efforts and solving the Palestinian question.

On his return to Cairo, Mubarak urged the Palestine Liberation Organization to show greater flexibility to make a revival of peace efforts possible, declaring, “this is of great importance.”

An Egyptian spokesman said Mubarak and Hussein met without aides for an hour at a royal palace in Amman. They were joined by Egyptian and Jordanian delegations over a working lunch, and then met by themselves again for further talks.

“We are making maximum efforts with all parties and hope that we will reach a result,” Mubarak said. “The Palestine Liberation Organization must make an effort in this connection because this is of great importance.”

Mubarak did not make it clear if the “effort” required from the PLO was acceptance of the U.N. Security Council’s Resolution 242 that sanctions Israel’s right to exist.

Hussein dropped the PLO from his search for a negotiated settlement with Israel because of its refusal to accept Resolution 242.
