Tamil Refugee Ship Seized
A Honduran-registered ship accused of taking 155 Tamil refugees on a clandestine voyage to Canada was being held here today and a Honduran Embassy spokesman said his country has asked Spain to arrest its captain.
A Honduran spokesman said in Madrid that his government has asked the Spanish Foreign Ministry to keep the 425-ton Aurigae in Las Palmas and detain its West German captain, Wolfgang Bindel. The refugees were picked up by Canadian fishing boats from two lifeboats in the North Atlantic and told authorities that they had paid $2,500 each for the trip.
