East German Maik Malchow cut nearly a half-second off his world record in the amateur kilometer time trial Thursday night to win the first gold medal of the World Cycling Championships.

Malchow, 23, of Leipzig, sped around the velodrome in 1 minute 2.09 seconds. His old mark was 1:02.547, set in 1980 at Mexico City, when he was a junior rider.

In the second round of the men’s amateur match sprints, 1984 Olympic gold medalist Mark Gorski of the United States came from behind to edge Canadian Alex Ongaro and Czechoslovakian Roman Rehouner to move into the quarterfinals.

Earlier, in the second round of the 4,000-meter sprints, defending world champion Viatcheslav Ekimov of the Soviet Union turned in the fastest outdoor time ever, 4:28.95. Steve Hegg of the United States also gained the quarterfinals in 4:35.86.

A U.S. Cycling Federation jury ruled that Leslee Schenk of Boulder, Colo., is ineligible to ride in the championships because of a banned-substance violation.

Schenk was being considered for the final spot on the women’s road race team.

She was disqualified and banned from racing for 30 days after NyQuil was found in her system during a routine urine test at the Coors International bicycle race earlier this month.

The suspension was appealed, but Thursday a federation jury of three denied the appeal.

The jury said the governing bodies of the federation and the Union Cycliste Internationale “do not permit any use of a banned substance by a competitor and provide for a 30-day suspension for violation.”
