5.1 Million More Acres of Farmland to Be Idled

WASHINGTON —
Farmers have contracted with the government to take an additional 5.1 million acres of highly erodible cropland from production under a 10-year Conservation Reserve Program, the Agriculture Department said Friday. The latest sign-up was for participation in 1987. Two earlier sign-ups for 1986 covered more than 3.8 million acres.
