The Nation : AIDS Experts Cite Discord

Dissension among AIDS experts at the national Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta has led to the suppression of research and sabotaged experiments, according to the Miami Herald. Dr. James Curran, head of the CDC’s AIDS program, denies the allegations, but Curran is at the center of the controversy, scientists said. Among their complaints is that Curran has blocked publication of research that showed commercially available spermicides kill the AIDS virus within 60 seconds. Lab workers at the CDC said ruined experiments, intense authorship claims on research papers and internal squabbling has led to the departure of key researchers.
