Two Vietnam veterans began a “fast for life” in opposition to U.S. aid for Nicaragua’s contra rebels. Standing on the steps of the Capitol in Washington, they declared they would eat nothing and drink only water. Charles Liteky, 55, of San Francisco, read a statement to reporters that said: “As veterans, we will not remain silent--we will not sit passively by--while timid politicians lead us into another Vietnam.” In an earlier protest of U.S. intervention in Central America, Liteky in July renounced the Medal of Honor he won in Vietnam.
