France’s Jeannie Longo, denied the championship for the past two years by American Rebecca Twigg Whitehead, finally downed her nemesis, winning the title ride of the women’s 3,000-meter individual pursuit at the World Cycling Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo.

In the semifinals of the pro men’s 200-meter match sprints, nine-time champion Koichi Nakno, of Japan, moved to within one step of his 10th straight title by downing West German Dieter Giebken, 2-0, in the best of three event.

Also advancing was Hideyuki Matsui, of Japan, who beat a countryman Nobuyuki Tawara, 2-0.

Earlier Monday night, the defending world champions, Czechoslovakia’s Vitezslav Voboril and Roman Rehounek, shut out Americans Kit Kyle and David Lindsey to win their second straight tandem match sprint title.
