The Navy has decided to proceed with construction of a prototype blimp for tests that will determine whether the service returns the airships to service. After months of study, the Navy issued a “request for proposals” to industry, soliciting bids on building a single “operational development model” that would be outfitted to test it for use as a “radar platform” that could travel with surface ships and warn them against low-flying cruise missiles.
