Attorneys for the Philippine government, which has filed a $54.6-billion suit against deposed President Ferdinand E. Marcos, can question him to prepare their case, a federal judge ruled Tuesday in Los Angeles.

U.S. District Judge Mariana Pfaelzer said Marcos must appear before government lawyers to give a deposition, although she said he may refuse to answer questions by claiming protection from self-incrimination.

Richard Kendall, a lawyer hired by the Philippine government, said the questioning session is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 30 in Honolulu, where Marcos took refuge after fleeing Manila in February.

Marcos’ attorneys had sought to block the questioning or to have the transcript of the proceeding sealed if the deposition was ordered.
