The World : Chile Spied, Spain Charges

Spain, angered over alleged spying by Chilean agents who it says rummaged through wastebaskets at its embassy in Santiago, recalled Ambassador Miguel Solano from Chile “for consultations.” A Foreign Ministry spokesman said, “We have sought explanations from the Chilean authorities, and what they told us was unsatisfactory and unconvincing.” Spanish officials said last month that Chilean agents rummaged through refuse for several weeks to recover used typewriter ribbons, carbon paper and shredded documents that they pieced together and read. The officials said no sensitive information was in the trash.
