Bomb Kills 3 French Soldiers
BEIRUT — A remote-controlled bomb exploded today near a French-manned U.N. peace-keeping position in southern Lebanon, killing three French soldiers who were jogging past and wounding one, officials said.
The 66-pound bomb was planted on a road about 200 yards from the French position in the Shia Muslim village of Jouaiya, nine miles east of the southern port city of Tyre. It was not known who planted the device. In Paris, French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac’s spokesman condemned the bombing as a “terrorist crime” and called on the United Nations to improve the security surrounding the force.
