San Diego Roundup : Longboard Invitational Is Set for This Weekend

More than 100 men and women will compete Saturday and Sunday in the second Oceanside Longboard Club Invitational at Oceanside Pier. Greg Mungall of Costa Mesa and Nancy Emerson of Hawaii will defend their championships.

Competition begins both days at 7 a.m., with the finals scheduled Sunday at 11:30 a.m. An awards banquet and a concert by the Mar Dels will follow the final round. Admission is free. For more information, call 722-7583.

The Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a Men’s Unrated Doubles Beach Volleyball tournament at Oceanside’s Harbor Beach courts Saturday and Sunday. The tournament is open to any players who do not have a California Beach Volleyball Assn. rating.

The fifth Miller Lite Softball Marathon will be played at the Imperial Beach Sports Park Sept. 13-14. Men’s, women’s and co-ed teams can play by giving a minimum $200 donation to Easter Seals. Each team will receive T-shirts, certificate and a group photograph.

Street, bomber, sportsman and super stocks will be racing at Cajon Speedway Saturday night. The only division with a decisive leader is the street stocks, where Jerry Gay (2,810 points, 10 wins) is well ahead of John Tipps (2,265 points).

Gates will open at 3:30 p.m., qualifying starts at 6 and racing begins at 7:30. West side tickets are $6, East side are $5, tickets for children 6-12 are $2 and tickets for children under 6 are free.

The American Karate Federation will sponsor a free demonstration of Shorin-Ryu karate at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9 in San Diego State’s Peterson Gym. This style of karate is a combination of Chinese “kung fu” and the Okinawan punching art “te.” After the demonstration, anyone over 15 may register for regular training sessions.

The fourth Bodyboard Championships will be Sept. 13 at Carlsbad State Beach. The contest is open to anyone and has a registration fee of $5, or $10 with a T-shirt.

The fourth Carmel Mountain Ranch VIP Golf Classic will be Monday at 12:30 p.m. at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Golf course. Cost is $100 per person and includes an awards dinner after the tournament. Proceeds benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Assn. of San Diego County.
