Suriname Rebels Attack Post Again
PARAMARIBO, Suriname — Anti-government rebels attacked an army post at Albina on the French Guiana border Friday for the second time in three days, the Suriname News Agency reported.
Sgt. Maj. Edward Demees, director of the news agency, said in a telephone interview that the shooting began at 8 a.m. local time. He said army troops returned the fire and pursued the rebels, but there have been no reports of casualties.
It was the third attack since July on the Albina post, 84 miles east of Paramaribo. Two government soldiers were wounded in a four-hour assault Wednesday in which the rebels also sabotaged electrical installations.
The government says guerrillas operating in the eastern Marowijne district are led by Ronny Brunswijk, a former soldier and onetime bodyguard of the former Dutch colony’s military leader, Commander Desi Bouterse.
