Father Guido Sarducci recruiting for the priesthood?

An ad in a special Sept. 22 edition of Newsweek that is available only on college campuses features the former “Saturday Night Live” correspondent with this tongue-in-cheek copy: “Eat free in an Italian restaurant. Become a priest.”

Since Sarducci (a.k.a. actor-writer Don Novello) pokes fun at the priesthood (with a new album, “Breakfast in Heaven” and a book-in-progress on an alleged scandal sheet called the Vatican Enquirer) he seems an odd choice for priestly promoter. But the ad’s serious--it includes a phone number for inquiries.

“We came to Father because he’s popular with young people and he appeals to the type of missionaries we want to attract,” said Rev. Allen Maes of the Oblates Mary Immaculate in Chicago, which sponsored the ad. “Besides, we figured if we got out of the business then Sarducci would be unemployed as well.”
