Phillip O. Siler Jr., 24, of Buena Park explained that he was late because he had left during lunch to pick up a paycheck and got caught in traffic.

Not good enough, said Superior Court Judge Samuel B. Taylor Jr., who sentenced Siler to jail. He did, however, reduce the sentence to one weekend from two because Siler had appeared in court to apologize.

Thus Siler became the fourth juror in Orange County this year threatened with jail by judges for failing to show up for jury duty or returning late from breaks.

The judges’ get-tough policy has not always been appropriate, however. One of the four was arrested last March for failing to show up for jury duty, but it was discovered that he had not been formally called. The county agreed to pay him $4,000 to settle any claims he had.
