Thousands of family members and friends of Kansas City men who never returned from the Vietnam War joined in dedicating the Kansas City Vietnam Memorial. “It is not only a symbol honoring the dead. It is a testimony to the living, to the spirit of patriotism and fellowship in this community,” said former Missouri Gov. Christopher S. (Kit) Bond, speaking on behalf of Gov. John Ashcroft. Police estimated 5,000 or more attended the ceremony, many of them wearing camouflage garb, Veterans of Foreign Wars hats or POW T-shirts. The memorial bears the names of 369 residents of seven counties in Missouri and Kansas killed or missing in action in Vietnam.
