Indonesia’s troubled relations with Australia worsened with Jakarta’s surprise withdrawal of landing rights for Australian air force planes. An Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed the latest withdrawal “for the time being” of landing rights on the island of Bali for Australian air force planes to refuel en route to a base in Malaysia. He said that requests to land will be considered on a “case-by-case basis.” The action was believed related to articles and books critical of Indonesian President Suharto that have been published in Australia.
