Divided Germany

Michael H. Haltzel’s excellent article (Opinion, Aug. 31) on German priorities, while incisive, failed at the last.

As an American of German descent, I most strongly dissent from his conclusion that America must do nothing to indicate a backing down from its commitment to an eventual, peaceful German reunification.

Twice in this century the Germans’ hegemonism has plunged the world into bloody global conflict. Despite their apparent comity there would undoubtedly be a third. Historically, we cannot trust their ultimate goals any more than we can trust those of their once and future ally, the Soviet Union.

The Berlin Wall (the only positive accomplishment of John F. Kennedy’s Administration) must remain and reunification of this potential colossus must be subverted, even at the risk of further alienation. It is a symbol of the evils of both the Nazi Socialist horrors and those of its successor Socialist horror, the U.S.S.R.
