Anaheim : City Postpones Decision on Regulating Vendors

Share

City officials Tuesday postponed a decision on how to regulate vendors who peddle fresh produce, ice cream and sandwiches on city streets and sidewalks.

After reviewing recommendations by the Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Donald R. Roth said another month of review is necessary. The city will consider different ordinance proposals for vendors who sell in commercial, industrial and residential areas.

Current proposals by the city staff and the Chamber of Commerce differ considerably on various issues, including whether pushcart vendors should be prohibited and whether vendors should be allowed on public sidewalks. The chamber wants to allow both, while John Poole, city code enforcement supervisor, opposes both.

Another point of disagreement is whether to allow music or amplified sound, used by the vendors to attract customers.

Poole had recommended that no amplified sound, music or any other sound-making device be allowed. One of the main complaints that led to the proposed law regulating vendors dealt with the noise they make.
