Heavy thunderstorms, strong winds and mountain snow pounded parts of the West, while temperatures fell to record lows in at least 16 cities from Chicago to Richmond, Va. Intense thunderstorms moved across northwest Utah, spinning off a tornado near Kearns. No damage was reported. One-inch hail was reported at Eagle Range, Utah, near the Great Salt Lake, while marble-size hail fell at Ogden, Utah. Temperatures plunged to record lows in parts of the Ohio Valley, the mid-Atlantic states and the Northeast. Cities where record lows for the day were set include Allentown, Pa., 42; Atlantic City, N.J., 43, and Baltimore, 44.
