Champion Gary Kasparov took a commanding 8-6 lead Tuesday in the world chess championship when Anatoly Karpov resigned without resuming play in the adjourned 14th game.

The game was adjourned Monday after 40 moves with Kasparov, playing white, holding a strong position. Karpov’s chief second, grandmaster Igor Zaitsev, notified tournament officials Tuesday that Karpov had resigned.

Karpov, who was world champion for 10 years before losing the title to Kasparov last November, now must win three of the remaining 10 games without a loss in order to capture the title.

Under rules of the match, a victory counts for one point and a draw gives each player half a point. Kasparov would retain his title if the match ends in a 12-12 tie.

Kasparov has won three games in the match, Karpov one and the remaining 10 games have been drawn. The first player to win six games or score 12 1/2 points wins the match.

The two Soviet players completed 40 moves each Monday and Kasparov sealed his 41st move. Deputy arbiter Bob Wade of Britain said Kasparov’s sealed move was Nc5.

Here are the moves:
