Manila Cancels Official Marcos Birthday Party

MANILA —
The government announced today that it will stop observing the birthday of ousted ruler Ferdinand E. Marcos as a national holiday.
Marcos, now in exile in Honolulu, turns 69 Thursday. Marcos’ supporters in Manila said they will celebrate his birthday and called for a rally at a seaside park where previous loyalist demonstrations have turned violent.
