Bette Davis Eyes Ex-Husband No. 4 on Flight to Maine

Bette Davis’ eyes fell upon a familiar face on her weekend flight from New York to Portland, Me. She ran into her fourth ex-husband, Gary Merrill, her co-star in “All About Eve.”

“He was on that plane,” Davis said after arriving at Portland International Jetport. “Out of 10 million people, we both end up on the same plane. I don’t believe it.”

Davis and Merrill were married in 1950--24 days after her Mexican divorce from artist-strongman William Grant Sherry--and divorced in 1960.

Asked if she spoke to Merrill, from whom she got a bitter divorce, Davis said: “Of course. We were very cordial to each other.”
