MEXICO CITY — The federal Urban Development and Ecology Department has begun a one-year cleanup of the water and beaches of the Pacific resort of Acapulco and the nearby town of Puerto Marquez, the government newspaper El Nacional reported Tuesday.
The project includes construction of 42 miles of sewer lines and repairs to 40 miles of existing lines.
A cellulose plant, found to be the main source of pollution in the Papagayo River, Acapulco’s source of drinking water, is to be closed.
