Pasadena : Science Program Funded

The Pasadena Unified School District Board of Trustees will spend $12,000 this fall to help prepare minority and female middle-school students for careers in mathematics, engineering and science.
The board voted this week to have students in its three middle schools participate in the state Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program at California State University, Los Angeles. Officials said that by starting the program in middle school they hope to increase the number of students interested in the three fields at the high-school level.
The ultimate goal is to prepare them to pursue math-based college programs, officials said. Students recommended by teachers and counselors will take MESA classes in study skills and motivation as well as in academic subjects.
