Services Scheduled for Rev. Dahlberg
A memorial service for the Rev. Edwin T. Dahlberg, former president of the National Council of Churches, will be held Friday in the chapel of Orangewood American Baptist Estates in Phoenix.
Dahlberg, 93, a resident here since his retirement in 1966, died Sept. 6. He suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
A Baptist minister who served five churches across the nation, he headed the National Council of Churches from 1957 to 1960, during which time his proposal that mainland China be admitted to the United Nations drew criticism from right-wing groups that charged the council with being subversive.
During the 1960s, Dahlberg was a frequent speaker against U.S. involvement in Vietnam and participated in sit-ins and other demonstrations for equal rights for blacks. A pacifist and an anti-nuclear activist, Dahlberg was honored by the American Baptist Convention in the 1960s with the establishment of a peace prize in his name.
