Brazilian President Jose Sarney today called for massive capital flow to fuel the thriving free economy of his country, which he pledged to build into a “triumph of Western values.”

Marking the first U.S. visit in 30 years by a civilian president from Brazil, Sarney, in an address to the Americas Society, said his main task would be to remove the “pockets of absolute poverty” in Brazil. Noting that his nation is eighth among the major Western economies, Sarney said, “Our ambitions are lofty but they now seem within reach.”
