Proposition 63: ‘Se Habla Ingles’

Share

Del Olmo’s article made some good points about English being here to stay and about anti-immigrant sentiment underlying Proposition 63, but he seemed low on hope that Proposition 63 will be defeated on the November ballot.

Despite the California Poll and the voting records of San Francisco and Miami, I say there is hope that Proposition 63 will be defeated. Let’s not throw in the towel two months ahead of time!

I see hope in fair-minded Anglos and blacks who are verbalizing support for Latinos and Asians. I see hope that a carefully crafted media blitz will present facts to the public. Hope lies in the opportunity for those most concerned to explain the complications and costs of implementing this poorly drafted initiative.

What is needed is leadership. Councilman Michael Woo, are you there? Archbishop Roger Mahony, Assemblywoman Maxine Waters, are you there? Councilman Richard Alatorre, Assemblywoman Gloria Molina, where are you? We, the concerned citizens of Los Angeles, want an effective coalition to spearhead the defeat of this unwise, divisive initiative.

Meanwhile, at the grass roots level, let discussion flourish.
