Champion Gary Kasparov won the 16th game of the World Chess Championship on Monday, extending his lead to three points over challenger Anatoly Karpov.

Kasparov, 23, took advantage of a blunder made by the 35-year-old former world champion in the 37th move. Karpov resigned in the 41st move of the game, which took five hours.

The win gives Kasparov a virtually unassailable lead of 9 1/2 to 6 1/2 in the 24-game series. He needs only 2 1/2 more points out of the last eight games. A draw is worth half a point for each side.
