MAAZEL SIGNS 4-YEAR PACT IN PITTSBURGH
Conductor Loren Mazel has agreed to become music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony for four years beginning September, 1988, orchestra offcials said.
The new director assumes the title last held by Andre Previn, who resigned two years ago in a dispute with management and now serves as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Maazel, 56, became music consultant to the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1984. His title this season and next is principal guest conductor.
He has managed the Vienna State Opera and directed the Cleveland Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and the National Orchestra of France and has been principal guest conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of London.
