Iraq claimed that its warplanes dealt three “violent blows” to Iran’s Kharg Island oil-loading facilities. Maritime shipping and salvage executives based in Bahrain said it appeared that the strikes were among the most destructive since Iraq announced a blockade of Kharg, Iran’s main oil-exporting facility, 2 1/2 years ago. Meanwhile, Tehran radio claimed that Iranian troops captured strategic heights along the Iraqi border, about 105 miles southeast of Baghdad, in an overnight assault. Iraq denied the report.
