Alhambra : Delay on School Site Choice
The Alhambra school board has decided to wait until Nov. 18 to narrow its choices for a high school site, in order to give state officials time to evaluate two newly proposed sites in Monterey Park.
The board announced last week that it would make a decision Sept. 30. But Supt. Bruce Peppin said both the state Allocations Board and the Department of Education need time to evaluate the sites and must give their approval before the school board proceeds further.
The next step for the board is to order an environmental impact report on one or more of the sites.
A group of Monterey Park residents urged the board this week to build the high school at Monterey Pass Road and Garvey Avenue, one of two Monterey Park sites identified by consultants as alternatives to a 43-acre site in Rosemead that has aroused strong opposition.
Cindy Yee, one of the Monterey Park residents, said that the city needs a high school and that putting it at Monterey Pass Road and Garvey Avenue would clear a blighted area. The Alhambra district serves high school students in Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead and San Gabriel. Currently, all of its high schools are in the city of Alhambra.
