Italy will participate in the U.S. Strategic Defense Initiative and will work to see that the research on space defense does not worsen U.S.-Soviet relations, Foreign Minister Giulio Andreotti said in a message to Parliament. Andreotti said a memorandum establishing Italian participation in the project, popularly known as “Star Wars,” will be signed Friday in Washington. Defense Minister Giovanni Spadolini said that “the technical level of our industry is in fact sufficiently high to assure a special and original contribution.”
