Muslim Rivals Battle in Pakistan; 10 Die
Army troops enforced a curfew in parts of Pakistan’s second largest city Wednesday after up to 10 people were killed in two days of clashes between Sunni and Shia Muslims.
The clashes erupted Tuesday during traditional Shia mourning processions marking the martyrdom 14 centuries ago of Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Hussain.
Police and witnesses said that up to eight people were killed in Lahore and two other towns in Punjab province and two died in the town of Dera Ismail Khan, in North-West Frontier province bordering Afghanistan.
The army was called out in Lahore to enforce the indefinite curfew covering about half of the Punjab provincial capital.
The violence was the worst in years in Punjab involving the two sects, whose religious differences are most pronounced during the mourning period.
