A Providence, R.I., jury ordered the E.R. Squibb & Son pharmaceutical firm to pay a woman $400,000 for harmful side effects caused by the drug diethylstilbestrol, or DES, that her mother took in 1953 to prevent a miscarriage. Medical experts testified the woman suffers from an ailment linked to the DES taken by her mother.
