Seoul Students, Police Clash Over Asia Games
SEOUL, South Korea — About 2,000 students clashed with riot police Tuesday in a violent campus demonstration against the Asian Games, which open in Seoul on Saturday, witnesses said.
Hundreds of riot police and plainclothesmen firing tear gas stormed the campus of Korea University, where students from 28 universities in and around Seoul were holding a rally called to plan disruption of the 15-day games, the witnesses said.
Militant students have accused President Chun Doo Hwan of staging the games and the 1988 Olympics to boost his government’s image.
