Leaders of the European Community warned their Common Market partner that the subsidies threaten to torpedo a new round of comprehensive global trade talks being discussed at Punta del Este, Uruguay. The meeting of the 92-nation General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade deadlocked while trying to set an agenda for the new round proposed for Geneva next year. France has sought to keep farm subsidies off the agenda, but European and U.S. sources said France was bluntly told to soften its opposition to discussing a reduction of the subsidies.
