Japan announced a limited package of South African sanctions in line with its Western allies but backed off from imposing harsher economic measures. Chief Cabinet Secretary Masahara Gotoda said after a Cabinet meeting that the government decided to impose the measures until South Africa “demonstrates its concrete will to abolish apartheid.” Tokyo, which imposed limited sanctions last October, now will ban new import orders of steel and iron, halt air service between the two countries and ban government employees from flying on the South African flag carrier. Japan also will stop issuing visas to South African tourists.
