John William Rook, who confessed to raping and killing a 25-year-old nurse, was executed by injection early today in Raleigh, N.C. The U.S. Supreme Court refused on a 5-4 vote to halt the execution. Lawyers for Rook, 27, had asked for a stay until at least October, when the high court is to review a Georgia death penalty case that raises an issue also used in Rook’s appeals.
