The Main Problem With Drugs Is Their Illegality

Share

I viewed with alarm (thank you, Steve Allen!) Patricia Morgan’s shrill cry (Letters, Aug. 21) for mandatory drug testing of those people in certain occupations.

Refusing to submit to a drug test is not necessarily an indication that one is a drug user. There is a much larger issue at question here. Many of us good citizens who do not use drugs would never willingly concede to testing. Just as many of us are not Communists, yet we shudder at the thought of mandatory lie detector tests to prove it.

Freedom is a huge responsibility, and we are constantly faced with choices that we must make as individuals. Granted not everyone can handle this, and there are those who would invite a stern, parental government to make those choices for us. Let’s not have these small minds spoil it for the rest of us grown-ups.
