A Roman Catholic priest from Los Angeles was detained by the military in El Salvador but was later released, U.S. officials said. Father Michael Kennedy, 38, an assistant pastor of Our Lady Queen of Angels Church, and three Salvadorans were detained by troops in Usulutan province “for being there without permission.” A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in San Salvador said Kennedy was picked up in Berlin, 45 miles southeast of San Salvador, in a zone where fighting was taking place, and taken out for his own safety.
