East Germany’s Protestant Church leadership has accused the Communist government of failing to inform the population fully about the Chernobyl nuclear disaster last spring in the Soviet Union and said people felt abandoned by the authorities. The accusation was made in a report to be discussed at a meeting of the national synod in Erfurt. The report challenges the East German regime’s confidence in nuclear energy and calls for a rethinking of its dangers.
