The number of AIDS cases discovered among the state’s 54,000 prison inmates has increased from 15 in 1983 to 43 this year, the state Department of Corrections said. In 1985, the acquired immune deficiency syndrome virus was found in 15 prisoners, said a spokesman for the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, where all male inmates known to have AIDS are held. Thirteen state inmates have died from AIDS and 24 have been released on parole after their diagnosis.
