Hanauer Could Miss Mission Bay Regatta

Share

Chip Hanauer, the national unlimited hydroplane points leader, failed in five attempts Saturday to reach the necessary qualifying speed of 105 m.p.h. and may not be able to compete in today’s $125,000 Miller High Life Thunderboat Regatta on Mission Bay.

The fastest speed Hanauer could manage on a single lap of the 2 1/2-mile Bill Muncey course was 99.108 m.p.h. as a lack of power hampered his Miller American boat throughout the day. Hanauer will make one final qualifying attempt this morning.

Hanauer holds a 569-point lead over Jim Kropfeld in Miss Budweiser in the national standings, with the final race of the season next weekend on Lake Mead.
