1 Chernobyl Unit to Go Back on Line
MOSCOW — Radio Moscow said Tuesday that decontamination of one of the reactors in the Chernobyl nuclear power station is complete and that it will be returned to service early next month, less than six months after the disaster.
“Reactor No. 1 is ready to be commissioned,” the broadcast said. “Deputy Premier Boris Scherbina has said that it will be put into operation again early next month. Reactor No. 2 will be commissioned subsequently.”
The April 26 accident ripped through the No. 4 reactor, spreading a radioactive cloud across parts of Europe and making the immediate region uninhabitable.
The reactor was damaged beyond repair, and reactor No. 3, with which it shares some facilities, is believed by Western experts to be too contaminated to save.
