Share

City, county and school officials will launch a program Friday in the Wilmington Park Elementary School auditorium which is designed to steer children way from gangs.

The program, funded by the United Way, will be geared toward fifth-graders at eight Harbor-area elementary schools. The schools are: Bandini Street and Barton Hills in San Pedro; Broad Avenue, Fries Avenue, Gulf Avenue, Hawaiian Avenue and Wilmington Park in Wilmington, and Normont Terrace in Harbor City.

The Gang Alternative Program, as the project is called, is modeled after a 3-year-old program in Paramount. It includes classroom instruction, parent education and teacher and administrator instruction.
